What Is a Pulpectomy?
When an infection reaches the pulp of your tooth, it can cause serious pain and threaten the health of your smile. A pulpectomy removes the infected pulp, cleans the tooth, and seals it to prevent further damage, all while preserving your tooth. Dr. Scott D. Seitzinger and Dr. Daniela K. Shields are here to ensure your tooth stays strong and functional, preventing the need for more invasive treatments. Purchase Endodontics in Paducah, KY offers this procedure to help you keep your natural teeth so you don't have to worry about extraction. If you're feeling persistent pain or sensitivity, get in touch with us today to learn how a pulpectomy can protect your smile.
How Is a Pulpectomy Procedure Done?
To start the pulpectomy, Dr. Seitzinger or Dr. Shields will first examine your tooth to assess the infection. If the damage is minor, they may recommend a pulpotomy, but for more extensive infections, they will perform a pulpectomy. After numbing the area with local anesthesia to ensure your comfort, they will remove the infected pulp, clean the tooth, and seal it to prevent further infection. The procedure typically takes between 90 minutes and two hours, and most patients experience minimal discomfort, resuming normal activities shortly afterward.
What Can I Expect After A Pulpectomy?
After a pulpectomy at Purchase Endodontics in Paducah, KY, our team focuses on helping you feel comfortable while your tooth begins to stabilize. Mild tenderness or sensitivity is normal for a few days, especially when chewing, but this typically improves as the surrounding tissue settles. Most patients can return to their regular routine quickly, with simple aftercare steps supporting a smooth recovery. You may also be scheduled for a follow-up to complete the restoration and protect the treated tooth long-term. If you are searching for guidance on pulpectomy recovery, after pulpectomy care, or endodontic treatment, our team is here to provide clear instructions and continued support every step of the way.
What Are the Benefits of a Pulpectomy?

- Reducing the risk of further infection or complications
- Minimizing discomfort compared to more complex treatments like a root canal

Purchase Endodontics Reviews
This Dr. knows his stuff! Easy communication with the office and the whole staff was friendly!
Couldn't ask for a better experience - Just had a root canal and the experience was a breeze. First time to this office. I was taken back as soon as I finished filling out the paperwork. I had an X-ray taken and Dr. Shields came in immediately. She looked at the X-ray and explained everything she saw in great detail. Getting me numb is usually a process due to prior jaw surgery but Dr. Shields got me numb on the first try. Everything was a breeze after that. Dr. Shields put me completely at ease from the get go. I have had several root canals in the past in Dallas and Detroit. I would say this was the best endodontic experience I have ever had.
I really wanted to take the time to express my feelings of my visit. I am fearful of dental work in general and without even expressing that, the Dr and staff were so kind, I didn’t feel a single thing and I walked away feeling great. If you are someone who is afraid like me, this is your office. Not only did I not feel any pain, they explained the entire process to me which gave me a lot of confidence.
Both dentists here are amazing! Took my 14 year old son this morning for a root canal & he was so afraid it'd be painful but the dentist assured him it wouldn't be & it wasn't.She spoke with him & told him exactly what she was doing as she did it & her confidence, kindness, efficiency was great! He didn't feel any pain & we we're in & out in 45 minutes including the paperwork for being a new patient.I'd give 10 stars if I could for making this a great experience to the dentist.Thank you all at this office!
Dr Shields is an excellent Endodontis. She tells you everything she does. I had a root canal in 2021. No pain. Had to have another root canal Sept 2025. No pain. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. I recommend her to everyone.

Am I A Candidate for A Pulpectomy?
If you’re dealing with persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or signs of infection deep inside a tooth, you may be a candidate for a pulpectomy. Our team typically recommends a pulpectomy when the pulp tissue inside the tooth is inflamed or infected and needs to be removed to relieve discomfort and protect the surrounding tooth structure. This procedure is often ideal for patients who want to save their natural tooth rather than move forward with extraction, especially when prompt treatment can prevent the infection from spreading. During your evaluation, we will carefully assess your symptoms, dental imaging, and overall oral health to determine if a pulpectomy is the right next step for restoring comfort and preserving your smile.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a pulpectomy painful?
Thanks to modern techniques and local anesthetics, most patients feel very little discomfort during a pulpectomy. Some mild soreness might occur afterward, but this usually goes away within a day or two.
Is a pulpectomy a permanent solution?
A pulpectomy itself is not usually the final step. It's part of a process to stabilize the tooth before further restoration, often with a crown. When followed up properly, this treatment can contribute to a long-lasting solution.
Why would someone need a pulpectomy?
A pulpectomy is typically recommended when a tooth has been severely damaged due to decay, trauma, or infection. This treatment is often the first step in saving a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. The goal is to clear out the infection, preserve the structure of the tooth, and restore comfort.
