What Is A Pulpotomy?
A pulpotomy is a dental procedure designed to treat an infected or damaged pulp inside a tooth. When the pulp becomes infected from decay or trauma but the rest of the tooth remains healthy, a pulpotomy can help save the tooth by removing the infected portion while preserving the healthy tissue. This helps relieve the pain, stop the infection, and avoid the need for a tooth extraction. At Purchase Endodontics, we specialize in helping patients in Paducah, KY, keep their natural teeth with pulpotomies and other advanced endodontic treatments. Dr. Scott D. Seitzinger and Dr. Daniela K. Shields are committed to ensuring that you receive the care and comfort you need to restore your oral health. If you're suffering from tooth pain or sensitivity, a pulpotomy could be the solution to saving your tooth and preventing further damage.
How Is A Pulpotomy Performed?
Pulpotomies are performed at Purchase Endodontics using general anesthesia to keep you comfortable. First, our team will examine your mouth to assess for signs of damage or infection before deciding on the best approach for you. We usually recommend a pulpotomy when only a small portion of the pulp is infected, while more severe infections may require a pulpectomy or root canal. Dr. Seitzinger or Dr. Shields will begin the pulpotomy by isolating the tooth to keep it clean and dry. Then, they will carefully remove the infected portion of the pulp, taking care to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible. Afterward, they'll seal the remaining pulp to prevent further infection and restore the tooth with a filling or crown. Recovery after a pulpotomy typically takes 3 – 7 days, with mild discomfort lasting 24 – 48 hours before most patients return to their normal activities.
What Can I Expect After a Pulpotomy?
After a pulpotomy, it is normal to experience mild sensitivity or tenderness in the treated tooth for a few days as the area settles. Our team will provide clear aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery, which may include avoiding hard foods on the treated side and maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine. Most patients are able to return to their normal schedule shortly after this pulpotomy procedure, though any lingering discomfort can typically be managed with recommended medications. As part of your post-pulpotomy care, follow-up visits may be scheduled to monitor healing and determine if additional treatment is needed. This conservative form of endodontic treatment is designed to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible while keeping you comfortable throughout the process.
What Are the Benefits of A Pulpotomy?
A pulpotomy offers significant advantages for patients looking to preserve their natural teeth and avoid more invasive procedures. This treatment can quickly relieve discomfort, prevent the infection from spreading, and help maintain normal tooth function. The benefits of a pulpotomy include:
- Preserving your natural tooth and preventing the need for extraction
- Providing fast relief from pain and discomfort
- Preventing the infection from spreading to surrounding tissue and teeth
- Restoring the tooth's function, allowing you to chew and speak comfortably
- Provides a minimally invasive alternative to root canals or pulpectomies
Am I A Candidate For A Pulpotomy?
A pulpotomy is typically recommended for patients with a tooth infection or damage that affects only the pulp but not the surrounding tooth structure. Candidates often experience symptoms such as prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, persistent tooth pain, or visible signs of decay or trauma. However, a thorough evaluation by a dental professional is necessary to determine the severity of the infection and whether a pulpotomy is the most suitable treatment. If the infection has spread or caused significant damage, other procedures may be more appropriate. At Purchase Endodontics in Paducah, KY, Dr. Seitzinger and Dr. Shields will carefully assess your condition to recommend the best course of action for restoring your oral health.
Purchase Endodontics Reviews
Was referred for root canal but they explained thoroughly why that might not be the best option. Very impressed with Dr Seitzinger and the time he took with me. Highly recommend.
Had my first root canal here and it was SO easy! Genuinely it was the quickest, easiest, and most painless dental procedure I've ever had done. The Dr and staff were so kind and informative, answering every question or concern I brought up and the entire experience honestly felt like just a relaxed hang out in the exam room lol 😅
This Dr. knows his stuff! Easy communication with the office and the whole staff was friendly!
Couldn't ask for a better experience - Just had a root canal and the experience was a breeze. First time to this office. I was taken back as soon as I finished filling out the paperwork. I had an X-ray taken and Dr. Shields came in immediately. She looked at the X-ray and explained everything she saw in great detail. Getting me numb is usually a process due to prior jaw surgery but Dr. Shields got me numb on the first try. Everything was a breeze after that. Dr. Shields put me completely at ease from the get go. I have had several root canals in the past in Dallas and Detroit. I would say this was the best endodontic experience I have ever had.
I really wanted to take the time to express my feelings of my visit. I am fearful of dental work in general and without even expressing that, the Dr and staff were so kind, I didn’t feel a single thing and I walked away feeling great. If you are someone who is afraid like me, this is your office. Not only did I not feel any pain, they explained the entire process to me which gave me a lot of confidence.
